The Best Cover Letter Examples (And Tips)

By Jack Flynn and Experts - Aug. 31, 2020

Find a Job You Really Want In

So, after searching and searching, you’ve finally found that perfect job for you. You’ve looked into the position and realized that you meet all the requirements, have all the experience you need, and the pay is just right. You want to do whatever you can to land this one, but where do you start?

One of the best ways to leave a great, professional impression on an employer is to write a personalized cover letter that will highlight your application.

Maybe you’re nervous because this is the first time you’ve decided to write a cover letter, or because you’ve sought out other online guides that felt too cookie-cutter, and feel worried that using one of those templates won’t have the impact you’re hoping for.

You may be wondering how you start the letter, or how do you properly end it.

Don’t fret!

This article will give you a variety of cover letter examples that are far superior to the generic, “all-encompassing” cover letter samples many internet sources provide.

Make Yourself Memorable with a Strong Opening

Just like any other professional piece of writing, it’s important to open strong and leave a memorable impression on your potential employer. This will help show what makes you valuable before your letter is automatically added to the discard pile.

Start your first paragraph by giving an example of your experience or accomplishments, and how they are relevant to the position you’re applying for. For example:

I am interested in applying for the Park Ranger position at Rune National Park. As an environmental studies graduate, who has experience preventing forest fires and maintaining wildlife, I believe I’d be a perfect fit for this position.”

I am interested in applying for the Journalist position at Grew Cork Times. As a Freelance Writer for News Inc. I doubled article purchases and increased website traffic by over 20%.

As there are many fields and specializations, it’s important that you tailor your opening to fit your background and the position you’re applying for. You can mention your education, prior experience/positions at previous jobs, or any other relevant accomplishments. Choose wisely, as you do not want to overdue your opening and make it too lengthy.

More Value, Less Words

Using the same logic as the opening, it’s important that your entire letter emphasizes your value to the potential employer, without rambling and causing a loss of interest.

Preferably, your cover letter should be around 200 words. Sticking to this overall limit will ensure that you express your most crucial values without the unnecessary fluff. However, pack enough value in your letter to ensure that if the employer were to skim it, they’d still find importance in every sentence.

Here is an example of a 200 word cover letter:

Arthur Grant

Marigold, TX, 10987

Larry Morgan
Park Superintendent
Rune National Park
833 Rune Rd.
Marigold, TX, 10987

Dear Mr. Larry Morgan,

I am interested in applying for the Park Ranger position at Rune National Park. As an environmental studies graduate, who has experience preventing forest fires and maintaining wildlife, I believe I’d be a perfect fit for this position.

I have over 4 years of internship and educational experience, including field work I did at Mountain State Park over the summer. While participating in field work I was taught how to patrol grounds, and how I would properly conduct an investigation. My education has also given me extensive knowledge of not only Texas wildlife, but also native and invasive flora. Additionally, all of this experience is highlighted by my overwhelming passion for Rune National Park, as I have hiked and camped there several times.

Given this experience, I believe I possess the skills necessary to succeed at your company. I even developed a local conservation program for one of my college classes. Therefore, taking into account that I have all of the requirements for this position, I am ready and willing to start working immediately. I hope you will consider my application and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,

Arthur Grant

As you can see, it’s more than possible to be detailed in a limited amount of words. Remember that a concise, carefully crafted statement will stand out to your potential employer far more than rambling or a pre-made template.

Be Enthusiastic, Show How Much You Want This Job

So you know how long to make your letter, and what to include, but it’s also important not to forget one final, crucial ingredient. Remember, you really want this job! Therefore, write in a way that shows your enthusiasm.

Let your potential employer know how much you love the industry, company, position etc. For example:

Additionally, all of this experience is highlighted by my overwhelming passion for Rune National Park, as I have hiked and camped there several times.

As a detail-oriented, experienced dog enthusiast, I was excited to see an opening for the Dog Groomer position at your company. Considering my deep passion for dogs and dog care, I believe that, if given the opportunity, I would be a valuable asset to your team.

These examples show that you can blend your experience and accomplishments with your enthusiasm for the position you’re applying for. This is ideal, considering your limited word count!

Here is a sample of an enthusiastic cover letter:

James Tudor
767 Semloh Rd.
Dewfield, MA, 01230

August 17th, 2020

Ron Johnson
General Manager
Pet Inc.
401 Main St.
Dewfield, MA, 01240

Dear Mr. Ron Johnson,

As a detail-oriented, experienced dog enthusiast, I was excited to see an opening for the Dog Groomer position at your company. Considering my deep passion for dogs and dog care, I believe that, if given the opportunity, I would be a valuable asset to your team.

I have over 5 years of dog grooming experience, including the work I did at Love Dogs Co. for the past 3 years. During my time in this position I learned not only how to professionally neaten a dog’s coat, but also specialized cuts such as the lamb cut, lion cut and teddy bear cut. I am also knowledgeable in calming methods, such as ways to keep dogs under control while being washed or having their nails clipped. All of this experience is highlighted by my overwhelming passion for our canine friends.

Given this experience, I believe I possess the skills necessary to succeed at your company. I even received my dog trainer’s certificate from Dog College. Therefore, taking into account that I have all of the requirements for this position, I am ready and willing to start working immediately. I hope you will consider my application and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,

James Tudor

Enthusiasm will show your employer that you have passion for this potential job, and to them, you will come across as a more productive and stable employee. Your enthusiasm will also humanize you and set you apart from robotic, template cover letters.
